The Definitive Playlist of Indian Alternative Rock Songs (2000 - 2020)

Updated: Nov 18, 2024

Presenting: The ultimate playlist of Indian Alternative Rock Songs that we rocked out to in the 2000s and 2010s... and some that we wish we knew about back then! You can find the link for the playlist at the bottom of the article.

Just like "Alternative Rock" was born out of Gen X's dissatisfaction with the mainstream music of the time, but has overtime grown to blend elements of many musical styles including punk and hard rock, but also hip hop, folk, etc... the Indian Alternative Rock Scene was born out of 90s kids feeling like they couldn't identify with the popular music of their teenage years. Over the years, Indian Alternative Rock evolved, just like musicians themselves, to combine elements from Indian and international musical styles.

But this playlist is purely about the first wave of Indian Alternative Rock - and the Indian bands we followed and rocked out to at many a college music festival and house party in the 2000s and mainly- the 2010s.

Some ground rules: We have excluded bands with more conventional rock / metal / heavy metal sounds from this list, as this is purely an Indian ALTERNATIVE ROCK playlist. The songs have not necessarily been picked based on the "best" or most popular songs of the era. Instead, we've tried to put emphasis on bands/songs that were trying something totally new for Indian ears at the time, because that for us is what makes any art form truly alternative. (And let's be real, the Indian metal scene has consistently been so amazing for over 3 decades now that it would take 10 different playlists with multiple sub-playlists just to fit in all the diverse bands, sounds and genres.) Also, we've limited each band to one song only, so if you hear something you like please go check out the rest of that band's work!

So here it is- our Definitive Playlist of Indian Alternative Rock Songs from 2000 - 2020, in no particular order:

  1. Junkyard Groove - "Rock and Roll"

Easily the oldest still-active band in this list, Chennai rockers Junkyard Groove became synonymous with infectious energy and melodic hooks right from their inception circa 2005 - 2006. Of course the band has had many changes to the line ups in the years since, with vocalist Ameeth Thomas the lone constant. Their song "Rock and Roll" makes our playlist as it perfectly captures their signature blend of rock, funk, and soul- and especially their knack for crafting feel-good anthems with universal appeal.

2. Pindrop Violence - "Independence"

Mixing growling, low-tuned riffs with groove elements, Pindrop Violence were known for their ferocious live performances right from their formation in 2000. Not only did Pindrop Violence inject a much-needed dose of hardcore into the college rock circuit of the 2000s, but they would probably also have been the first people to spit fire at the idea of being tacked onto an Alternative Rock playlist. But they're no longer around, so their song "Independence" makes our playlist its relentless barrage of aggressive riffs and powerful vocals, embodying their rebellious spirit and unyielding attitude.

3. Tough on Tobacco - "Taxi Song"

Tough On Tobacco’s quirky, genre-blending style is perfectly encapsulated in "Taxi Song." With its playful lyrics and reggae-influenced rhythms, Tough on Tobacco offers a refreshing, laid-back vibe that stands out in the alternative rock spectrum.

4. Them Clones - "All About a Heartbreak

Masters of crafting atmospheric rock, Them Clones deliver emotional depth with "All About a Heartbreak." The song’s poignant lyrics and haunting melodies make it a standout track that resonates with the trials of love and loss.

5. Jeepers Creepers - "She Digs a Whippersnapper"

Jeepers Creepers' eclectic, post-punk approach shines in "She Digs a Whippersnapper." This track blends garage rock rawness with catchy pop sensibilities, creating an infectious, danceable tune that highlights their playful creativity.

6. Your Chin - "Your Chin"

The solo project of Mumbai-based Raxit Tewari, Your Chin blends electronic and indie rock elements seamlessly. The self-titled track "Your Chin" is a hypnotic mix of catchy synth lines and introspective lyrics, exemplifying modern indie innovation.

7. Doctor Zebra - "Surfer Girl"

Bringing a touch of surf rock nostalgia, Doctor Zebra's "Surfer Girl" is a breezy, feel-good track that transports listeners to sandy shores and sun-drenched days. Their lighthearted sound offers a perfect escape from the everyday grind.

8. Sky Rabbit - "Where"

Sky Rabbit's "Where" showcases their unique fusion of electronic and rock elements. The song’s dreamy synth layers and introspective lyrics create an ethereal soundscape that invites listeners to explore new sonic territories.

9. Menwhopause (feat. Jeet Thayil) - "Still Dirty Streets"

Given the amount of joy Menwhopause have spread among music lovers in India, we're probably doing them dirty by not picking a "purely" Menwhopause song, but we did say this is an alternative rock playlist. A collaboration that blends literary prowess with musical innovation, "Still Dirty Streets" features the poetic contributions of Jeet Thayil. Menwhopause crafts a haunting, contemplative track that delves into the darker aspects of urban life.

10. The Lightyears Explode - "Bow Down"

Known for their energetic performances, The Lightyears Explode deliver a punchy anthem with "Bow Down." The song’s infectious energy and rebellious lyrics capture the spirit of youthful defiance and unrestrained passion.

11. Death By Fungi - "Dead Soil"

Detouring into the realms of hardcore punk, Death By Fungi's "Dead Soil" is a relentless, high-octane track. Their unfiltered sound and intense delivery make this a powerful statement within the alternative rock landscape.

12. GreyFade - "The Devil's Pandey"

GreyFade’s "The Devil's Pandey" is an instantly catchy track that melds a fun, punk rock riff with the hook-iest of hooks. Their atmospheric approach creates a sense of mystery and intensity, drawing listeners into their enigmatic world.

13. Punk on Toast - "My Friends"

Punk on Toast channels the raw energy and rebellious spirit of punk rock in "My Friends." With its fast-paced tempo and anthemic chorus, the track is a celebration of camaraderie and youthful exuberance. If it doesn't instantly make you miss colony cricket and pantsing your cousins, you may want to get a medical professional to check if you -in the words of Def Leppard- have a heart at all.

14. The Riot Peddlers - "Muslim Dudes on Bikes"

The first thing to say about this track is that it would probably get the band imprisoned if it was released today. So, you know, shame on us as a society, etc. Secondly, The Riot Peddlers -hardcore, thorny, and known for their provocative themes and socio-political commentary- tackle prejudice head-on with "Muslim Dudes on Bikes." The track’s aggressive sound and confrontational lyrics make it a powerful voice then and now.

15. Tritha - "Fish Market (Maccher Bajaar)"

Blending traditional Indian sounds with rock, Tritha's "Fish Market (Maccher Bajaar)" is a captivating fusion of Eastern and Western musical elements (We refuse to use the term "Ethno-punk", sorry). Her experimental approach and powerful vocals create a uniquely fun and thought-provoking auditory experience that transcends cultural boundaries. It's also straight up punk rock AF.
